Theda Skocpol and Vanessa Williamson study the movement that grew after CNBC commentator Rick Santelli, in a February 2009 rant against Obama administration housing programs, called for Tea Party protests. Within two years activists had built hundreds of local groups and helped right-wing Republicans win in 2010. Interviewing members and attending chapter meetings in several regions, the two Harvard scholars report that older, middle-class supporters largely back Social Security, Medicare and benefits for veterans, while resisting taxes that help people they see as undeserving, such as immigrants, lower earners and the young. National elites and funders, meanwhile, pursue tax cuts for the wealthy, deregulation and privatization of Social Security and Medicare.
