About the book

Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, a nonprofit and nondenominational organization based in Tokyo, compiled the collection from passages in the Buddhist scriptures, covering the early teachings and the later forms of Mahayana in a concise, nonsectarian form. First published in Japan, it later appeared in English and has gone through many revisions and reprintings, becoming a standard introduction to Buddhism. Alongside the passages come a short history of Buddhism, a glossary of Sanskrit terms, an index and a list of the source texts. The text exists in over 46 languages, and more than 8 million copies have been handed out and placed in hotel rooms across 64 countries.

Buffer co-founder Joel Gascoigne said he and his co-founder Leo found it in their hotel rooms on a Hawaii vacation and ended up discussing it over lunch, noting that it holds philosophical teachings and stories as well as religious ones.

Joel Gascoigne (Co-founder/Buffer)

My co-founder Leo and I discovered this book, essentially the Bible of Buddhism, when we were on vacation together in Hawaii. We found it in the hotel rooms and we ended up taking it around the resort with us and discussing the wisdom and stories over lunch. It was fascinating. There are some religious teachings in the Teaching of Buddha. At the same time, there are just as many philosophical teachings and stories that would be enjoyable for anyone to read.
