The subjects range widely: Western civilizations, the figure of the writer, the novel, and mystics, apostles and philosophers. Richard Howard's English translation is the book that introduced Cioran to American readers, and it has since gained a reputation as an underground classic. Cioran writes in a clear, aphoristic style that lends itself to quotation. The Washington Post described him as a kind of final philosopher of the Western world, with statements as compressed as poetry.
