About the book
Eve Ensler, now known as V, built the episodic play from interviews with women about sex, relationships and violence against women, which began as casual talks with friends and spread through a chain of referrals. Its speakers range from a six-year-old girl and a septuagenarian New Yorker to a woman who sees her granddaughter born and a Bosnian survivor of rape. The monologues take up consensual and nonconsensual sexual experience, body image, genital mutilation, menstruation and prostitution. It premiered off-off-Broadway at HERE Arts Center in New York and won an Obie Award. It led to V-Day, a global movement that has raised over 100 million US dollars through benefits of the play for groups that work against violence toward women.
