About the book
Brit Bennett's second novel centers on Desiree and Stella Vignes, identical twins raised in Mallard, a fictional Louisiana town whose Black residents all have light skin. After witnessing their father's lynching, the sisters run away to New Orleans at 16 in 1954. Ten years on, their lives have split completely. Desiree is back in Mallard with her dark-skinned daughter, while Stella secretly passes as white, married to a white husband who knows nothing of her past. Moving across generations from the Deep South to California, the novel tracks both sisters and their daughters. HBO bought the rights for a limited series, and Bennett is attached as an executive producer.
Dua Lipa praised how it raises questions of race, class and gender through a three-generation family drama in 20th-century America, in which twin sisters choose very different paths.
