About the book
Bonnie Jo Campbell sets her novel on an island in Michigan's Great Massasauga Swamp, an area the people of nearby Whiteheart call the Waters. There the herbalist Hermine Zook, known as Herself, has healed the ailments of local women for generations. She inspires reverence and fear in the town and in her three estranged daughters, among them Prim, a lawyer, and Molly, a nurse. The youngest, the beautiful and lazy Rose Thorn, has left her eleven-year-old daughter, Dorothy, called Donkey, to grow up wild. Donkey looks for answers in the landscape and in math, longing for a father. The Washington Post named it one of the 50 best books of 2024.
