Angela Flournoy's novel follows a circle of Black women in America across twenty years of friendship. The story opens in 2008 with Desiree, January, Monique and Nakia in their early twenties, beginning careers, marriages and motherhood in New York and Los Angeles. Desiree is estranged from her sister, Danielle. January feels ambivalent about a good man; Monique, a librarian with ambitions as a blogger, is starting her working life; and Nakia tries to launch a restaurant without help from her well-off family. The Washington Post put it on its list of the ten best books of 2025.
