About the book
The working homeless, people with full-time jobs who still cannot keep a roof over their heads, are the subject of Brian Goldstone's reporting from Atlanta. Soaring rents, low wages and weak tenant rights are pushing them out, he shows, especially in booming cities with thriving economies. Goldstone follows five families as the city gentrifies and grows more unequal: Maurice and Natalia, priced out of Washington, D.C.; Kara, who mops floors at a public hospital and hopes to start a cleaning business; Britt, who lands a sought-after housing voucher; Michelle, training to be a social worker; and Celeste, working in a warehouse during treatment for ovarian cancer. One by one, each joins the working homeless. It won the Pulitzer Prize.
