About the book
The ten short stories by actor and comedian Danny McBride, creator of Eastbound & Down and The Righteous Gemstones, follow men unsure of who they are and of their place in society. In one, an amateur magician attempts a deadly stunt at a local mall; in another, a washed-up sitcom actor loses his dog to a coyote; in a third, two young runaways decide to go their separate ways. McBride had written about 80 television episodes before turning seriously to the book during the COVID-19 pandemic, drawn to the short form, and he cites Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian as an inspiration. Random House published it in June 2026, and it became a New York Times best seller.
Matthew McConaughey praised its men as legends in their own minds who drink their own Kool-Aid just to survive, and said the stories hilariously remind readers to back themselves.
