Tigana

On the Peninsula of the Palm, a region that somewhat resembles Renaissance Italy, nine provinces share a culture and language but have long fought among themselves. Guy Gavriel Kay's novel, winner of the Aurora Award for Best Novel, is set after two sorcerers, Brandin, King of Ygrath, and Alberico, a warlord from Barbadior, conquered the peninsula and divided it between them. Because Brandin's son was killed fighting the province of Tigana, Brandin crushed it and used magic to erase its name and history from people's minds, so only those born there before the invasion can hear or speak the name. A group of rebels, many of them from Tigana, sets out to overthrow both tyrants.

Brandon Sanderson called Tigana a wonderful work when suggesting books to his fans.
