About the book
Before revealing herself as its author, Cheryl Strayed wrote Dear Sugar, an advice column on the online literary magazine The Rumpus, anonymously and without pay. The collection gathers her own pick of those columns, favorites and the most popular, plus essays that never ran on the site. Readers write to her about love and life, and she answers by drawing openly on her own life, so the pieces read as much like memoir as advice. Strayed took the column over from its creator, her friend Steve Almond, and revealed her identity in February 2012. Vintage published the collection, and it entered the New York Times advice list at No. 5.
Mark Manson called her answers some of the most beautiful advice he has come across, and Ryan Holiday counted it among the best books he read in 2014 for its insight on pain, loss, love and success. James Altucher read it before his Twitter Q&A sessions to learn what real advice looks like.

It was wonderful to read these two provocative books of essays by two incredibly wise and compassionate women. Cheryl Strayed, also the author of Wild, was the anonymous columnist behind the online column, Dear Sugar and boy, are we better off for it. This is not a random smattering of advice. This book contains some of the most cogent insights on life, pain, loss, love, success, youth that I have ever seen. I won’t belabor the point: read this book. Thank me later. Cheryl had an advice column called “Dear Sugar”.
I was reading the column long before Oprah recommended “Wild” by Cheryl and then Wild became a movie and “Tiny Beautiful Things” (the collection of her advice column) became a book.
She is so wise and compassionate. A modern saint. I used to do Q&A sessions on Twitter. I’d read her book beforehand to get inspiration about what true advice is.
