About the book

During the summer of 2010, Shannon Sedgwick Davis, then a Texas mother of two who worked as a lawyer and human rights advocate, met a Ugandan general about an unusual plan to stop the warlord Joseph Kony. Kony had terrorized communities across four Central and East African countries, and over twenty-five years his Lord's Resistance Army killed more than a hundred thousand people and abducted tens of thousands of children as soldiers. Seeing international systems fail the most vulnerable, Sedgwick Davis took her Bridgeway Foundation far beyond conventional philanthropy, teaming up with a specialized Ugandan army unit and a private military contractor from South Africa. The experience made her question her beliefs about justice, humanitarian work and good and evil.

Adam Grant, who put it on his list of 19 new leadership books to read in 2019, said no one could read the memoir without being moved to help those with less.

Adam Grant (Author)

How far would you go to stop a murderous Ugandan warlord who had turned thousands of children into soldiers and sex slaves? As the head of a human rights foundation, Shannon Sedgwick Davis did something unprecedented: she hired private military contractors to train an army to stop him. It’s impossible to read her memoir without feeling moved to do more to help those with less.
