From 1952 through the 1980s, chemical companies including Ciba-Geigy dumped industrial waste in Toms River, a quiet New Jersey seaside town, and Dan Fagin reconstructs what followed. Leaking drums went into open pits, and acid-laced wastewater flowed into the river that shares the town's name. A cluster of childhood cancers emerged, and epidemiological investigations later tied it to local air and water pollution. Fagin follows the scientists and physicians who first connected pollutants with cancer, and residents who fought for justice, among them a nurse and the mother of a sick child. The saga culminated in 2001 in one of the largest environmental legal settlements on record. In 2014 it received the Pulitzer Prize in the General Nonfiction category.

I’m currently reading Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation by Dan Fagin, which tells the 60-year story of how one industrial company’s pollutants have been linked to various cancers in a small New Jersey town. I chose to read this book because I’m very interested in learning the origin of diseases and cancers within the human body.
