About the book
Derf Backderf, who once worked on a garbage truck, drew on that job for this graphic novel. It follows three friends in their twenties who ride a truck named Betty through a small town, hauling heaps of stinking trash while dealing with petty local officials, odd residents, summer heat and winter storms. The story is fiction, but Backderf breaks it up with nonfiction pages that explain what household garbage is made of and where it goes once it leaves the curb. It came after his earlier book My Friend Dahmer, an international best seller that won awards.
StoryCorps founder Dave Isay picked it off the shelf of his favorite independent bookstore and called it a gritty account of sanitation work, full of great characters and a perfect gift.

I spotted this graphic novel on a shelf at my favorite indie bookstore and it blew me away. A fascinating and gritty autobiographical account of working on a sanitation truck in a small town, it overflows with great characters and moments (including a few memorable ones involving maggot-infested trash cans). It’s the perfect gift.
