About the book

David McCullough's life of Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president, runs in chronological order from his birth to his death. It moves from the Missouri frontier and World War I to the Pendergast political machine in Kansas City, the Senate, the vice presidency and the 1948 Whistle-Stop Campaign. The presidential years take in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the confrontation with Stalin at Potsdam, the Marshall Plan, recognition of Israel, desegregation of the armed forces, the Korean War and the firing of General MacArthur. McCullough spent 10 years on it and interviewed hundreds of people who knew Truman. Published in 1992, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1993 and later became an HBO television film.

Morgan Housel listed it among 23 books that changed his life, describing Truman as a man who never expected the world's largest problems to land on him.
