About the book
Four documents giving conflicting versions of the same story make up Hernán Díaz's novel. One is Bonds, a successful 1937 novel inside the novel about Benjamin and Helen Rask: he a legendary Wall Street tycoon, she the daughter of eccentric aristocrats, the pair risen to the top of New York wealth as the speculative 1920s draw to a close. The others are an unfinished autobiography, a memoir and a diary, and since their accounts often cannot all be true, readers must decide what is. Set largely in the world of finance, the novel shared the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Dua Lipa said it made her head spin, pointing to how the story of a 1920s and 1930s Manhattan financier and his society wife comes in four versions that leave the reader unsure which to believe.

My March Monthly Read is Trust by Hernan Diaz. This book made my head spin! Set in New York City in the 1920s and ’30s, the story of a Manhattan financier and his high society wife is told through four ‘books’ – a novel, a manuscript, a memoir and a journal. But which version should you trust?
