About the book
After escaping from East Germany in September 1961, 22-year-old Joachim Rudolph joined a group of students a few months later to dig a tunnel back under the Berlin Wall and bring others out. Helena Merriman, creator of a BBC Radio 4 podcast, reconstructs the effort from hundreds of hours of interviews with survivors and thousands of pages of Stasi files. She follows the student diggers, a red-haired messenger, the Stasi spy who betrayed the tunnel, arrests on a first attempt, a leak, financial help from an American TV network, and the NBC crew that filmed the escape that freed 29 people. The book also covers the U.S. government's efforts to keep the NBC documentary from being shown.
Ryan Holiday named it among the very best books he read in 2024, calling it incredible and scolding himself for taking so long to get to it.
