About the book
William Bolitho, a journalist, profiles twelve historical figures he treats as adventurers, people who defied conventional morality and social norms in pursuit of greatness, power or personal freedom. His subjects range from conquerors such as Alexander the Great and Napoleon I to Casanova, Cagliostro and Lola Montez, and also include Isadora Duncan, Charles XII of Sweden, Mahomet and Christopher Columbus, with Woodrow Wilson as the final, modern case. Bolitho asks what drives a person to risk everything against fate, and he casts the adventurer as a permanent rebel against the established order and its gods. The book sets the exceptional individual against the limits of his or her era. It first appeared in 1929.
