Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights

Salman Rushdie's 2015 fantasy novel takes place in a near-future New York, where a great storm opens the way to a period of strange events. A gardener discovers that his feet have left the ground, a comic artist wakes to a being that resembles his own comic creation, and an abandoned baby marks the corrupt with boils and blemishes. These people share an ancestry they know nothing about: all descend from the jinn, and centuries earlier Dunia, a princess of the jinn, loved a mortal man devoted to reason. Alongside them, the philosophers Averroes and Al-Ghazali resume their old argument about reason and God. The title counts out the 1,001 nights of Scheherazade's storytelling.
