About the book
The modern world, Richard Cockett contends, is full of ideas born in Vienna, from California architecture and Hollywood Westerns to advertising, shopping malls, nuclear fission and fitted kitchens. Home to Freud, Klimt, Mahler and Wittgenstein, the city sat at the heart of a vast empire, and when the Second World War came and fascism rose, its circles of thinkers scattered abroad and took their ideas with them. Cockett follows that intellectual history from psychoanalysis to Reaganomics, and from Red Vienna's communist rebels to the Austrian School's neoliberal economists. The book appeared from Yale University Press in 2023.
Tyler Cowen included it on his list of the best non-fiction books of 2023.
