About the book
Paul Ryan's 2014 political book recounts his childhood in Janesville, Wisconsin, up to the day at sixteen when he found his alcoholic father dead, and admits that he relied on government assistance in that period. Ryan, a Republican congressman and the party's 2012 vice presidential nominee, also describes how he handles bills and politics, and analyzes the 2012 election, the GOP's struggle to win a majority of voters and how widespread identity politics is. He criticizes President Obama and the progressive movement as a whole, argues that civil society rather than government creates jobs and growth, and urges Republicans to reach Hispanic and African American voters while remaining a conservative party.
Rupert Murdoch said he was looking forward to reading it, calling Ryan the most influential Republican in Congress.
