About the book
John Berger's book grew out of the BBC Two television series he made with producer Mike Dibb, conceived as an answer to Kenneth Clark's more traditional Civilisation. It is built from seven numbered essays, four combining words and pictures and three made only of images, and was written by Berger and Dibb with Richard Hollis, Chris Fox and Sven Blomberg. The essays question the hidden ideologies in visual images, looking at European oil painting, the female nude and the way women are shown in advertising. Berger's analysis of the nude introduced the idea of the male gaze, which feminist critics such as Laura Mulvey later took up. It was published in 1972.
Photographer David McCammon said it reaches beyond photography and keeps building a reader's vocabulary for talking about images.
