About the book
Dennis E. Taylor's 2016 novel follows Bob Johansson, a man who has sold his software business and plans a leisurely retirement, until he is killed crossing the street. A century later he wakes to learn that people in his condition have no rights and that he is state property. His mind now runs on computer hardware, and he is meant to serve as the controlling AI of an interstellar probe hunting for habitable planets. Refusing means being switched off; accepting makes him a target, since at least three other countries are racing to launch their own probes. The novel opens the Bobiverse series, which continues with For We Are Many, All These Worlds and Heaven's River.
