We Must Not Think of Ourselves

In November 1940, Adam Paskow is imprisoned with the rest of Warsaw's Jews behind the walls of the ghetto, guarded by Nazis. Weeks later, in Lauren Grodstein's novel, a mysterious figure asks him to join a secret group of archivists preserving the truth of what is happening inside the walls. Adam starts taking testimonies from students, friends and neighbors, among them his flatmate, Sala Wiskoff, stoic, funny and married with two children. The story draws on Oneg Shabbat, a historical testimony-gathering project.
