About the book
The Mulvaneys of High Point Farm, just outside the small town of Mt. Ephraim in upstate New York, seem to have all that makes life sweet. Michael Mulvaney runs a successful roofing business, his wife Corinne centers her life on the family, and the town admires them and their four children, among them Marianne and the youngest, Judd. On Valentine's Day 1976 an incident involving sixteen-year-old Marianne is hushed up locally and never discussed within the family. Years later Judd tries to piece together what happened. Joyce Carol Oates's novel was an Oprah's Book Club pick and became a 2002 television film.
Oprah Winfrey said the family still haunted her more than a year after she read the novel.
