About the book
Born into the Waorani people of Ecuador's Amazon rainforest, one of the last groups reached by missionaries in the 1950s, Nemonte Nenquimo spent her childhood learning plant medicine, foraging, oral storytelling and shamanism from her elders. At fourteen she left the forest to study with evangelical missionaries in the city, until dreams of her ancestors called her back to her own culture. She went on to unite indigenous nations of the Upper Amazon in an alliance and to win a landmark fight against oil companies that protected more than half a million acres of rainforest. Her co-writer is her husband, Mitch Anderson, who founded Amazon Frontlines.
Reese Witherspoon chose it as her November pick for Reese's Book Club, calling it an unforgettable memoir about fighting for home and heart.
