Richard N. Bolles wrote his self-help guide for job seekers and revised it annually for decades, until his death. Instead of sending out resumes in bulk, he urges readers to network their way to the person with the authority to hire them. He also asks them to work out what they do best and what they enjoy most, which he argues tend to coincide. The Flower Exercise, a key element, gives seven ways for job hunters to define themselves before they search. The title came from a 1968 meeting joke, after Bolles heard he was among several co-workers bailing out of a struggling organization. By 2010 it was out in 22 languages; sales exceed ten million copies.
Armina Sirbu, a serial entrepreneur, said it helped her see that despite a computer science degree her heart lay in training and HR, and that it gave her the courage to go for it and showed her that mixing the two fields was fine.

"What Color is Your Parachute" by R. Bolles is iconic for a student or fresh graduate who has no clue what's next. It helped me realized that even though I was graduating from computer science, my heart was in training and HR so that's how I chose my masters and then built a career path that mixed both IT and HR. Basically it gave me the courage to "go for it", showed me that it's ok to mix the two fields. This proved to be a very smart decision later on, because this mix is a rare one thus well paid, too.
