The question of how to change the lives of poor children in large numbers, in a way that could be copied across the country, led Geoffrey Canada to create the Harlem Children's Zone, and Paul Tough reports on what followed. The zone covers 97 blocks of central Harlem and works as a laboratory for new, sometimes controversial ideas about poverty in America. Canada's conclusion is that poor children can compete with middle-class peers only if everything around them changes: their schools, their neighborhoods and even how their parents raise them. Tough portrays Canada alongside the Harlem parents and children trying to improve their lives, often against long odds.

As for non-fiction, Half the Sky (about crimes against women, especially in the developing world) and Whatever it Takes (about the Harlem Children’s Zone and the work of Geoffrey Canada) both changed my world-view enormously, and I thought they were both super compelling.
