After the September 11 attacks, Pat Tillman left professional football in 2002 to enlist in the US Army. Jon Krakauer's biography follows him through the Army Rangers, a deployment to Iraq, a war he openly called illegal, and his death in Afghanistan in 2004. Most soldiers on the scene could see that the fatal shots came from a ranger in his own platoon, yet the Army kept this from his family and the public for five weeks while President Bush invoked his name. Krakauer relies on Tillman's own letters and journals, conversations with his wife, friends and fellow soldiers, and research in Afghanistan. An updated edition adds material obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.
