About the book
In 2014 journalist Reni Eddo-Lodge wrote a blog post about her frustration that people unaffected by racism were leading Britain's conversations about it; it went viral, and she set out to dig into the source of those feelings. Her debut book explores how gender, class and race are linked in Britain and other countries. It begins with the history of Black and Asian Britons, from the Atlantic slave trade and Indian soldiers in the First World War to the Bristol Bus Boycott and the 1981 riots, and also covers institutional racism, white feminism and ideas of class that include only white people. It won the Jhalak Prize and a British Book Award.
Emma Watson chose it for her book club, Our Shared Shelf.
