About the book

Science journalist Anil Ananthaswamy explains the mathematics underneath machine learning and the current wave of artificial intelligence. He shows that the field rests on fairly simple ideas, some of them centuries old, such as linear algebra and calculus, and that it took computer science and 1990s chips built for video games to turn them into today's AI. Such systems already decide on mortgages, cancer diagnoses and bail, and shape research in chemistry, biology and physics. Ananthaswamy also suggests links between artificial and natural intelligence, and argues that using AI safely depends on grasping the math behind it. A paperback afterword covers the Transformer architecture behind ChatGPT. It came out in 2024.

Tyler Cowen gave it a claim to a place on his best non-fiction of 2024 list, while warning that many readers will find the math too much.
