About the book

Suzanne Mallouk, lover and muse of the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, tells her own story in Jennifer Clement's first book. Having run away from an unhappy home in Canada, she met Basquiat in a Lower East Side bar in 1980, and their stormy, passionate relationship unfolds against the hip hop and underground scenes of 1980s New York. Basquiat moved from the subways to Manhattan galleries and into the company of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Madonna and Debbie Harry, and in 1988 he died of a heroin overdose at twenty-seven. Clement shapes Mallouk's account into a poetic portrait of addiction, obsession and love.

Dua Lipa read it on one level as a chaotic love story between Basquiat and Suzanne Mallouk, his lover and muse as the pair hustled to make it in a 1980s New York shadowed by drugs, violence and racism.

On one level, Widow Basquiat is a chaotic love story between the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and his lover and muse, Suzanne Malouk. Just 20 years old when they meet, we witness them hustling to make it in 1980s New York: a place where anything feels possible but that also hides a dark and sinister side of drugs, violence and racism.
