About the book

Researchers once filled it, but as the seas rise, caretaker Dominic Salt and his three children are its last inhabitants, packing up the seeds to be moved somewhere safer. Isolation weighs on all of them: Raff, 18, nurses a first heartbreak, Fen, 17, spends her nights among the seals, and nine-year-old Orly, devoted to botany, fears losing the natural world. In the fiercest storm in the island's history, a woman named Rowan washes ashore. McConaghy drew on Macquarie Island, which she visited.
Reese Witherspoon chose it for Reese's Book Club, saying she loved it and comparing its tense, frightening ending to the wildest finish of a thriller film.

It's so good.…I'm not going to tell you what happens, but boy, that ending is so scary and tense, like the craziest end of a thriller movie. And I just love this book so much, it was so good.
