About the book
A Library of America volume of five books and nineteen essays, the collection gathers every major work William James wrote between 1902 and his death in 1910. Many pieces began as lectures for general listeners as well as philosophers. The Varieties of Religious Experience studies intensely religious people from different cultures and eras and weighs religion by what it adds to individual lives. Pragmatism proposes judging rival metaphysical positions by their practical consequences. A Pluralistic Universe rejects the idea of the absolute, and The Meaning of Truth argues that ideas become true through events. James, who founded pragmatism with Charles Sanders Peirce, meant Some Problems of Philosophy as both a history of metaphysics and a statement of his own system.
Mark Zuckerberg pointed to William James, a philosopher of the 1800s who he said shaped much of modern psychology, after a chapter of Sapiens on religion left him wanting to go deeper.

When I read Sapiens:, I found the chapter on the evolution of the role of religion in human life most interesting and something I wanted to go deeper on.
William James was a philosopher in the 1800s who shaped much of modern psychology.
