In Berlin, Carla von Ulrich, the daughter of a German father and an English mother, sees her life overtaken by the rise of Nazism. The American brothers Woody and Chuck Dewar each keep a secret. English student Lloyd Williams comes from a left-wing family, while social climber Daisy Peshkov chases popularity and the fast set, and her cousin Volodya works in Soviet intelligence.

Tudor Mihailescu, a finance and business enablement manager, included it in his book recommendations as the second part of Follett's Century Trilogy, which he called a blend of history and fiction.
