About the book
Growing up in California as the daughter of Chinese immigrants, Maxine Hong Kingston lived between two worlds: the America her parents had settled in and the China described in her mother's talk-stories. Those tales of fierce, cunning women warriors sat uneasily beside the real oppression of women from which they came. Her book blends autobiography with old Chinese folktales across five linked chapters that read like short stories, retelling among others the legend of Fa Mu Lan, who took her father's place in battle. Its mix of genres has made its classification a matter of debate. Alfred A. Knopf first published it in 1976, and it went on to take the National Book Critics Circle Award.
