About the book
Bruce Catton's account of the last year of the American Civil War follows the Army of the Potomac as Ulysses S. Grant campaigns in Virginia from early 1864 until the fighting ended in 1865. Battles covered include Cold Harbor, the Wilderness, the Crater, the assault on the Mule Shoe at Spotsylvania Court House and Appomattox Courthouse, with Meade, Sheridan and Lee among the generals portrayed. Catton drew on official war records, unpublished letters from Federal soldiers, diaries and memoirs, and his bibliography lists more than 200 works. It is the final volume of his Army of the Potomac trilogy and won both the Pulitzer Prize for History and the National Book Award for Nonfiction.
