About the book
Set mainly in Paterson, New Jersey, Junot Díaz's 2007 novel centers on Oscar de León, a sweet, overweight Dominican boy obsessed with science fiction, fantasy and falling in love. He lives with his old-world mother, Belicia, and his rebellious sister, Lola, hopes to become the Dominican answer to J. R. R. Tolkien, and is still waiting for his first kiss. Hanging over him is the fukú, a curse that has dogged his family for generations. Told by several narrators, with footnotes, Spanglish and many science fiction references, the novel also takes in the Dominican Republic's experience under the dictator Rafael Trujillo. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction as well as the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Tim Ferriss put it on his list of top fiction books for nonfiction addicts, calling it a fun read full of geek culture and strong history.
