About the book
Set during the Greek Heroic Age, the novel by Madeline Miller retells myths from the Odyssey from the point of view of the witch Circe. Born in the house of Helios, the sun god and mightiest of the Titans, Circe is an odd child, lacking both her father's power and her mother's allure. Among mortals she discovers a gift for witchcraft that can turn rivals into monsters and threaten the gods. Zeus answers by banishing her to a deserted island, where she is left to hone her craft alone. Miller published it in 2018, and it became a #1 New York Times best seller.
Blogger Jason Kottke put it on his best books of 2018 list, writing that three quarters of the way in he might like it more than The Odyssey. Jacqui Pretty, who founded Grammar Factory, named it among the novels she loved in the past year.

Another contemporary reinterpretation of Greek mythology from the perspective of a woman. I’m 3/4s of the way through Circe right now and I might like it even more than The Odyssey.
