Steve McConnell treats software construction, which he defines as coding, debugging, detailed design, construction planning, unit testing and integration, as the central activity of development and one that can significantly raise a programmer's productivity when given focus. Published in 1993 by Microsoft Press, the handbook is a compendium of construction techniques covering everything from how to name variables to when a subroutine is worth writing, and urges developers to move beyond code-and-fix programming as well as big design up front and the waterfall model. One of its seven parts is devoted to craftsmanship, including layout, style and self-documentation. It won a Jolt Award, and a revised second edition later added hundreds of new code samples.
