About the book
Set in Singapore, Kevin Kwan's satirical romantic comedy follows NYU professor Rachel Chu, who agrees to join her boyfriend and colleague Nick Young for a summer in Singapore. She pictures a humble family home and quiet days with the man she wants to marry. Nick has left out a few details: his childhood home looks like a palace, he grew up flying privately more often than riding in cars, and his family ranks among the ten richest in Asia. They are in town for the wedding of the year; his formidable mother Eleanor doubts Rachel is right for him. Kwan said the 2013 novel loosely draws on his own Singapore childhood; two sequels and a 2018 film followed.
Cat Williams-Treloar read it two years or so into life in Singapore, says she has never laughed so much, and champions the whole series and praises Kwan's books for their cultural insights from across the region.

A couple of years after moving to Singapore I read Kevin Kwan's first book "Crazy Rich Asians". I've never laughed so much in my life and have been an advocate of the entire series. To this day, whenever someone has a copy in hand at the airport or in our regular store, I tell them how amazing the books area. Kevin is a genius, and his books are full of beautiful cultural insights from across the region. I can't wait for the movie!
