About the book
British Field Marshal William Slim tells the story of the Burma Campaign of the Second World War from the commander's seat. He led shattered British forces in retreat from Burma into India, rebuilt the army's morale and fighting ability with almost no support from home, and, at the head of the 14th Army alongside American and Chinese forces, drove the Japanese out of Burma. Published by Cassell in 1956, the memoir is divided into six books, among them Defeat, Forging the Weapon, The Tide Turns and Victory. Reviewers praised Slim's candor about his own mistakes, and the first printing of 20,000 copies sold out almost immediately.
James Mattis called Slim the finest British field commander of the Second World War and said the book shows how he revived his beaten forces and outmaneuvered the Japanese.
