About the book
Frances Moore Lappe's book argues that world hunger comes from poor food policy rather than a shortage of food, and that meat production adds to scarcity and harms the environment. It makes the case for vegetarian eating on environmental grounds and promotes protein combining, pairing grains, legumes, seeds and dairy so plant meals supply protein comparable to meat. Four parts move from protein in American agribusiness and human nutrition to tables of food values and finally guidelines and hundreds of meatless recipes. In a tenth anniversary edition Lappe conceded that getting enough protein from plants was easier than she had first claimed, and more than three million copies have been sold.
Steve Jobs was reported to have read it during his first year at Reed College and said that was when he all but gave up meat for good.

Steve Jobs (Founder/Apple)
In that first year at Reed, Jobs also read "Diet for a Small Planet," a book about protein-rich vegetarianism that went on to sell three million copies. It was a breakthrough. "That's when I pretty much swore off meat for good," Jobs told Isaacson.
