About the book
Baruch Spinoza's Ethics equates God with nature, a view scholars read variously as pantheist, panentheist or atheist, and asks what human freedom can mean in a world without theological, cosmological or political moorings. The work opens with definitions and axioms: substance is what exists in itself and is conceived through itself, God is an absolutely infinite substance made up of infinite attributes, and a thing is free when it exists and acts from the necessity of its own nature alone. Spinoza's God has no free will and no purposes, yet he names the intellectual love of God as the highest good for human beings.
Mark Manson described it as the foundation of rationalism, the school of thought that dominated the Enlightenment.
