About the book
Al and Crystal Lil Binewski run a traveling carnival, and when business falters they decide to breed their own show of human oddities, dosing Lil during her pregnancies with drugs, arsenic and radioisotopes. Their children include Arty, the Aqua Boy, born with flippers and a ruthless ambition; the conjoined twins Elly and Iphy; Oly, a hunchbacked albino dwarf; and Chick, who looks normal but has telekinetic powers. Oly narrates the family history across two interwoven time periods, as sibling rivalry plays out on tours through the backwaters of America. Katherine Dunn spent nearly ten years writing the novel, which reached the final round of the National Book Award.
Alina Varlanuta, creator of The Hole in Your Head, named the Binewski family among her favourite characters in fiction.
