The question Jim Collins and Morten T. Hansen set out to answer is why some companies thrive in uncertainty and even chaos while others do not. Leading more than twenty researchers, they spent nine years studying companies that rose to greatness, outperforming their industry indexes at least tenfold over fifteen years in settings shaped by large forces and fast shifts beyond the power of leaders to predict or control. The authors contrasted these 10X companies with carefully chosen comparison companies that fell short of greatness in equally extreme conditions. The study arrives ten years after Good to Great and differs from it by looking at unstable environments as well as performance.
