Green Hills of Africa

On a month-long safari in East Africa in December 1933, Ernest Hemingway and his wife, Pauline Pfeiffer, hunted big game largely in Tanganyika, near Lake Manyara, and his second work of non-fiction records the trip. He set out to write what he called an absolutely true book, testing whether non-fiction could reach the artistic integrity of a novel. The narrative falls into four parts, from Pursuit and Conversation to Pursuit as Happiness, and mixes hunting with talk of writers such as Tolstoy, Flaubert and Stendhal, some of it with an Austrian expatriate. His friend Karl, whose successes test Hemingway's competitiveness, shares the hunt. Serialized in Scribner's Magazine, the book appeared in October 1935 to an uneven reception.

Josh Waitzkin said in a podcast interview that it is one of the most underrated books Hemingway wrote.
