About the book
The slip-box, or Zettelkasten, that German sociologist Niklas Luhmann used to take notes is the method Sönke Ahrens, a researcher in education and social science, explains and defends. Ahrens holds that good, efficient writing depends on organizing ideas and notes intelligently, and that a box of interesting ideas and bibliographic references can make students, academics and nonfiction writers more productive. Drawing on established psychological findings, he explains how the technique works and why, so that time goes into thinking and developing ideas in writing rather than hunting for notes and quotes. A revised and expanded second edition followed, and the book now counts sales above 100,000 copies and translations into seven languages.
Ali Abdaal said it transformed how he takes notes, and that he keeps finding new ideas each time he reviews his highlights from it.
