About the book
David Epstein argues that people, companies, institutions and whole societies can gain from narrowing their options. He describes a world of nearly unlimited choice about what to do, how to spend time and who to become, and contends that complete freedom can paralyze, while unlimited resources do not reliably produce the biggest breakthroughs. Prizing freedom too highly, he says, can damage efforts from founding a company to doing creative work to finding personal satisfaction. Epstein examines the science and practice of constraints: when guardrails help and how, whether resources are scarce or the limits are chosen to sharpen focus and spur innovation. He is also the author of Range.
Adam Grant said it shows how well-chosen limits can unblock insight and release creativity. Cal Newport enjoyed it, as he has all of Epstein's books, and ranks him among the finest storytellers in idea writing.

David Epstein, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Sports Gene and Range, has a new book out called Inside the Box. As with all of Epstein’s books, I really enjoyed it. He’s one of the best storytellers currently working in idea writing.
