About the book
Set in Czechoslovakia across the years of the Second World War and its aftermath, Milan Kundera's novel follows Jaromil, a precocious boy whose mother treats his childhood remarks as wisdom and pins them to the walls of their house. She decides early that he is a poet, and the two stay tightly bound as he grows. When a Communist revolution sweeps the country, the adolescent Jaromil throws himself into the party's cause while chasing fame for his verse. Kundera first meant to call it The Lyrical Age, his name for youth, and he borrowed the final title from Arthur Rimbaud, whose A Season in Hell contains the line.
In Tools of Titans, Neil Strauss read it as a parable about the choice everyone faces between living up to their potential and giving in to the pressure of the moment.
